For adventure seekers or anyone craving peace away from the crowds, these hidden beaches promise the authentic Caribbean experience you’ve been dreaming of.
What to Know Before Visiting Hidden Dominican Beaches
- Transportation: Many of these beaches are wild and untouched, so you’ll likely need to rent a car or arrange transportation to reach them.
- Food Options: Most don’t have restaurants or shops nearby, though you can often find small food stands selling the iconic yaniqueque: a crunchy, salty fried bread that tastes heavenly with a little ketchup and salt.
- Local Dining: In some areas, especially around Samaná or Puerto Plata, you may also find local restaurants serving fried fish with tostones, moro, or fresh salads and don’t forget una fria (Presidente beer).
- Pro Tip: Stop by a restaurant before heading to the beach and bring food with you, or pack simple snacks like sandwiches, fruit, and plenty of water or juice. At the end of the day, the real stars here are the beaches themselves. If you love the ocean, you’ll fall in love with these hidden gems.
How to Plan Your Dominican Republic Beach Road Trip
The ideal way to visit multiple hidden beaches is a northern Dominican Republic road trip from Puerto Plata to Samaná (or reverse). This coastal route connects the country’s most secluded beaches while offering stunning Caribbean views.
Starting Points & Airports: Fly into Puerto Plata International Airport (POP) – closest to the northern beaches
Land in Santo Domingo (SDQ) – in the southern part of the island, then travel north to either Puerto Plata or Samaná
Alternative: Santiago airport also serves the northern region
Transportation Options for Budget Travelers: Rental Car (Recommended): Gives you flexibility to explore remote beaches at your own pace.
Public Transportation: The DR’s public bus system (guaguas) is also incredibly affordable.
Private Car Services: Local drivers offer affordable transfers between beach towns, typically $20-50 depending on distance.
