Curly Journey

My “curl evolution” didn’t start out too bad. When I was little, my hair was pretty tame. Smooth with a little body and very thick. As I grew and hit puberty, the frizz started. My mother has pin straight, thin hair and had no idea how to style my hair. I had to figure it out on my own. At one point I cut it all off!

Pre Teen girl in the 80s

By the time I hit High School, I discovered hair gel. It was the 80’s after all! But all I knew was to wet and gel my hair every day. I wore it crunchy. No one knew about “scrunch out the crunch!”

As an adult, I battled my hair every day. A constant cycle of blowouts at the Dominican Salon and even chemical straighteners.

Adulthood and self discovery

Then my curl evolution took a turn. One day in a book club run by the lovely Susan Eckert (read all about her here) we were asked to make a vision board. (Read all about that here) The book was Playing Big and we had to focus on ourselves and our dreams. I decided to add a Pantene add with a photo of a woman with tight, curly hair. I decided at that point that I would embrace myself the way I was made and that included my hair! My path led me to find some great facebook groups and learned about The Curly Girl Method. There was work involved in caring for my hair and grew out the straighteners. Now I needed a haircut! I searched and found Curl Evolution in Babylon, NY.

First time at Curl Evolution Salon

The experience was life changing! Not only was it a beautiful salon but it was the first time I walked into a salon and wasn’t asked to change my hair. They gave me a lesson on caring for my hair and even threw in some freebies so I can continue to care for my hair at home. You can see from my before and afters that the experience turned my curl evolution around.

Excerpt from their website:

“We believe that every curly girl deserves a custom haircut that addresses the unique needs of her curls. More than this, we believe in the power of knowledge and strive to teach our clients how to recreate salon styles at home using easy techniques and the right products for their curl type. Our goal is for clients have great curls everyday!”

I have continued my curl evolution with a combo of the salon and their master stylists like Angela (here is her instagram), Amanda, and Melissa (Here is her instagram) My kids have all gotten their hair cut by them too. I have taught them from young to LOVE their natural hair. Not all got my curls but the salon is perfect for all textures. Especially my wavies at home! The one time I got a blow out, I made sure to go there! They were so gentle with it and prepared it ahead for the heat. Completely different that the old blow outs i used to get where I could smell my hair burning!

Curl Evolution For A Cause

Recently I went in to the salon for a good cause. You see the owner, Allison Bridges Put a call out for a volunteer to get their hair styled for a news piece. You can watch the finished piece. Click here to watch. Allison is working tirelessly for new legislation. After so many years in the business and teaching at beauty schools, Allison saw a major inequity among women with different hair textures. There is no real education for stylists to learn to cut or style curly hair or work with natural textures.

Making Changes

Allison has made it her mission to make curly cuts available to everyone! She talks about how years ago she didn’t know how to help her curly client who wanted to wear her hair natural. Watch here. Over the years her clients would move out of town and have to travel so far back to get a hair cut. They cannot find anyone local who can cut curly hair. Allison has started a petition to change legislation so all of us can have access to experienced stylists. I am passionate about supporting Allison. This will help moms with young kids who can’t get a proper haircut or instructions on styling and caring for their kids hair. This will help young girl’s self esteem since they don’t have to walk around with frizz balls or cut all their hair off like I did when I was a teen. Please consider signing the petition. Products For Your Curl Evolution

Allison is also focusing on quality products. It is very important to maintain the health of your hair. She has a new line of curly products that don’t contain alcohol, sulfates, parabens or mineral oils and are also vegan, cruelty free, thermal protectant and safe for color treated hair. All these things are in most of the hair products we all use. This is why we cannot get out of the vicious cycle of frizz and dry hair. Allison has worked with master chemists to come up with these formulas. They are tried and true products that will help all of us curly girls. I am excited to be part of the launch! Here is my link to the launch.
