How to make Dominican Beans.

Today I’m bringing you one of the true staples of the Dominican soul, beans. In our kitchens, beans are more than just food, they’re comfort, tradition, and family all in one pot. They’re warm, flavorful, and nourishing. The kind of dish that welcomes you home after a long day.

This recipe for Dominican beans is simple yet full of love, just the way our mothers and abuelas have been cooking them for generations. Beyond their delicious taste, beans are packed with nutrients that give your body strength, energy, and wellness in every spoonful.

Instructions

  1. Start with love in your kitchen. Put a pan on medium heat and melt the butter. As it sizzles, add 1/2 of the lime, onions and peppers. Let them soften slowly, you’ll notice the sweet aroma filling your kitchen, the same smell that always reminds us of home.
  2. Build your flavor. Add the sazón, tomato paste, olives, and capers. Stir gently so everything blends together. The colors will brighten, and the mixture will begin to smell rich and savory, this is the base that gives the beans their Dominican soul.
  3. Bring in the beans. Add your can of beans, along with half a can of water. Give it a good stir, making sure all those flavors combine. Let it come to a gentle boil.
  4. Season with care. Once you see it bubbling, sprinkle in the salt and drizzle the oil. This step is small, but it makes all the difference in rounding out the flavor.
  5. Let it simmer. Lower the heat and allow the beans to cook for about 10 minutes. Stir every now and then, this is when they thicken up and soak in all the goodness.
  6. Freshen it up. Just before finishing, squeeze in the juice of 1/2 lime and add the fresh cilantro. Stir again, and let it cook for 5 more minutes. The citrus and herbs will brighten everything, making the beans taste alive.
  7. Serve with warmth. Turn off the heat, grab a ladle, and serve your beans with rice, plantains, or just as they are. Sit down, take a spoonful, and enjoy the comfort of a dish that’s simple, nourishing, and full of love.
